Developing your USP
In partnership with Spread The Word, led by Paul Ashton and Nina Steiger
Part 1: Every great scriptwriter has a ‘voice’. Every commissioner and producer is looking for writers with a powerful voice. But what IS voice? How do you recognise your own? Can you nurture it? Can you create one? Or is it something that just comes naturally?
Part 2: Armed with insight about your voice, the 2nd half of the session looks at how to choose subjects that suit your skills, exploring a variety of approaches to some of the most resonant topics of the day; harnessing scale, metaphor and form to amplify your voice; and discussing, promoting and pitching your work with all this in mind.
Paul Ashton is the Development Producer at BBC Writersroom, where he finds, nurtures and promotes new writers for BBC drama and comedy. Paul has previously worked as a script reader, editor and tutor for a variety of companies and universities, while his own writing has been produced for stage and screen. His book The Calling Card Script was recently published by A&C Black.
Nina Steiger is Associate Director at Soho Theatre where she leads the Writers’ Centre. She previously worked in new play development, as a Producer and Literary Manager for a range of organisations in New York.
