In October 2009, I came to a writers’ workshop led by Nina Steiger [Associate Director]. I handed her an unsolicited script – I did not know her. In my experience this is rather like ‘blind calling’ and it is unlikely that your script will be read even. Much to my amazement, Nina rang me 3 months later and from our first meeting, it was clear that Soho intended to produce the play. This is because she read it! The play ran at Soho for a month and is about to start its second tour with ATC; it was published by Methuen and we have sold the German rights. It will have a reading in New York in May, has attracted film interest and will possibly be produced in Brazil this summer.
Soho Theatre enables important and relevant work to be staged from voices that otherwise would not be heard; its attitude to unsolicited plays is crucial to this and it is vital that the theatre should be supported.”
