apples and snakes: jackie kay
poetry that packs a punch
25 June 2008
Not only is Jackie Kay the author of several poetry collections and the acclaimed novel Trumpet, she’s also something of a national treasure. Taking her adoptive upbringing and Scottish-Nigerian heritage as jumping-off points, her work probes the notoriously knotty topics of gender, race and identity. She was awarded an MBE for services to literature in 2006. Tonight, especially for you, she presents a choice platter of her finest poems.

Plus contributions from

Nick Drake – chronicler of life’s serio-comic moments, and past master of the stings-like-a-bee school of poetry.

Roger Robinson – finely-tuned storyteller with buckets of charisma and the lyrical sensibilities of a musician.

Gloria Dawson – newcomer who plays fast and loose with poetic form, invariably finding beauty in the ensuing chaos.

Another Soho night with Apples & Snakes – the heart of poetry in the heart of the city.

Apples & Snakes is the UK’s leading organisation for performance poetry
