Setagaya Public Theatre and Soho Theatre presents
the diver
by Hideki Noda and Colin Teevan
directed by Hideki Noda
19 June - 19 July 2008
7.30pm

Award-winning actress Kathryn Hunter rejoins legendary Japanese director Hideki Noda and the team behind Soho/Tokyo hit play The Bee for a new physical and inventive collaboration. Drawing on the themes of cruelty, imperialism and betrayal, Hideki Noda and Colin Teevan's new play, The Diver, ingeniously links the ancient Japanese Tales of Genji with a Noh theatre play and a contemporary murder.

With Harry Gostelow, Kathryn Hunter, Hideki Noda and Glyn Pritchard.

Composer Denzaemon Tanaka, designed by Catherine Chapman, lighting design by Christoph Wagner, sound design by Paul Arditti.

'Kathryn Hunter, most shape-shifting of performers, brilliantly encompasses the haunted criminal… you feel there is nothing she can’t play… The transitions are astonishing… I was intrigued, bemused, startled and fascinated.’

Michael Billington, The Guardian

‘Startling emotional intensity… Hunter’s performance gleams and changes shape like quicksilver, while Noda… is a powerfully contained presence. There’s excellent support, too, from Harry Gostelow and Glyn Pritchard.’
The Times

Bewitching… An unforgettable image of the compulsive but futile nature of revenge.’

Independent

‘The meeting of minds between Japanese writer/director Hideki Noda and Irish playwright Colin Teevan produces oddly thrilling theatre.’
Metro

‘…that shape-shifting chameleon of an actor, Kathryn Hunter… plays multiple personalities with rare panache.’

Daily Telegraph
