giant steps: writers' masterclass
8 - 9 March 2008

Let your imagination run wild through Soho Theatre with this weekend masterclass for writers and theatre-makers. In the two-day session, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with areas of practice that are frequently inaccessible or unviable for freelance practitioners; for instance, you may initiate a collaboration with an artist from another discipline; you may work outside your comfort zone and try a fresh approach to story-telling; you might want to see what the fuss of site specific work is all about.  You will get individual, one-to-one feedback, tailored exercises and approaches and a chance to explore your own style.  As a group, we’ll work together and put nascent ideas on their feet to create a movable feast throughout the Soho building.  Expect the unexpected!

Led by Nina Steiger and Justin Young

Justin Young is the author of Moonwalking in Chinatown, Soho Theatre's inaugural piece of site-specific work which took audiences in our local Chinatown neighborhood.  He wrote and directed The Houghmagandie Pack, a site-specific play about Robert Burns, for Grid Iron and Unique Events, Fierce – An Urban Myth, also for Grid Iron, which won a CATS Award, a Stage Award, a Herald Devil Award, and was nominated for the TMA Award for Best Musical. Most recently Justin has written a commission for Soho Theatre, and developed a new musical theatre piece at the National Theatre Studio with composer Nick Powell.
