Emma Wee

Having originally trained as a sculptor Emma works as a designer and director in theatre, opera and site specific collaborations. Following an European tour with the Royal Opera House’s production of Faust as an assistant director, she directed its most recent revival at Covent Garden.
Past design work includes; Behna, Zameen ( Kali Theatre Company, Soho Writer’s Theatre), Die Lustige Witwe, Vlaamse Opera -  Ghent, Thérèse Raquin for Opera Theatre Europe in ROH2,Covent Garden, Martha Loves Michael (Ruffian Productions – Pleasance Above, Edinburgh 2005), Iron, (Contact Theatre – Winner of the 2005 MEN award for Best Studio Production) In God We Trust; (Peshkar Productions), Something Dark, (Contact Theatre) ,   A Streetcar Named Desire (National Theatre Studio), Borderliners (Albany Theatre), Duet For Four (Fin Walker Dance), People Show 105 , Damned & Divine (English National Opera Studio),South of The River (ENO Baylis) and Mneme (Tate Liverpool Museum/Ann Hamilton). Current commissions include work for the Unicorn Theatre, Royal Opera House and the Robert Hylton Urban Classicism dance company.

Emma also leads a range of design workshops for education projects such the Write an Opera, an inset programme for Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers and Turtle Opera (an annual project with children who have Asperger’s Syndrome), for the Royal Opera House Glyndebourne Opera, Opera North, Live and Direct (an Arts Council initiative for new Black and Asian directors) and was the design mentor for the 2006 NSDF companies. Much of her workshop work is based on a ongoing exploration of Synaesthesia and the development of visual and spoken languages as a means of creating work with both performers and non-performers alike.
