Julia has worked as a film & video maker, visual artist, performer and theatre director. As co-director (with Phelim McDermott) of dereck, dereck Productions, works include; Cupboard Man, Gaudete and The Vinegar Works (Almeida).
She has directed new works in opera, dance and theatre; Uranium Miners (ROH at Donmar), Difficult Walking (ICA), Hamlet Dances (Purcell), Bed (NT), Fallen Angel (Bush) & Baby Doll (NT). From 1991-4 she was joint Artistic Director of the Leicester Haymarket and Young Vic Theatres, where works include; Macbeth, Therese Raquin, The Family Reunion, Blood Wedding, Frankenstein, Dead Soil, Under Milk Wood and Hamlet?
As a result of a three year NESTA Fellowship, Julia created the ‘Trans-Acts Trilogy’: an accident at the cross-roads between video and live presence - a smash up at the intersection of performance and the script - a director and actress splayed across the dissecting table, waiting for the understudy to walk on and corpse - a last supper for an audience of twelve intimates. ‘Trans-Acts’ is Julia’s most recent solo project in which photography, video, object and performance intersect. The complete trilogy was presented at the National Review of Live Art in Glasgow, February 2005, and the TROUBLE Festival, Brussels in November 2005.
'Sheer magic… you could revisit this piece over and over and always find new dimensions, new insights.'
