Paul Keogan

Born in Dublin, Paul studied Drama at The Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College Dublin and at Glasgow University. After graduating he worked as Production Manager for Project Arts Centre.

He has designed set and lighting for Ballads, Seasons and The Rite of Spring (CoisCéim); The Massacre at Paris (Bedrock); Chair, Angel Babel and Here Lies (Operating Theatre); Shutter (Siren Productions), Trad (Galway Arts Festival); Family Stories and Tejas Verdas (b*spoke) and most recently Homeland (Abbey Theatre).

Other lighting designs include: Down Onto Blue, Danti Dan and Olga (Rough Magic); Melonfarmer, The Electrocution of Children, Amazing Grace, Living Quarters, Making History, The Map Maker’s Sorrow, Cúirt an Mheán Oíche, Mrs Warren’s Profession, Bailegangáire, Down The Line, The Tempest, Tartuffe, Eden, That Was Then, Da, The Wild Duck, The Cherry Orchard, The Burial at Thebes, Defender of the Faith, Portia Coughlan and Heavenly Bodies (Abbey and Peacock Theatres); Gates of Gold and Performances (Gate Theatre); Born Bad and In Arabia We'd All Be Kings (Hampstead Theatre); Too Late for Logic (Edinburgh International Festival); Shimmer and Olga (Traverse Theatre); The Tempest (Theatre Royal); Antigone (Storytellers); The Blind Fiddler and Ghosts (The Lyric Theatre, Belfast); The Silver Tassie (Almeida Theatre); The Gay Detective (Project); Passades (Operating Theatre); Quay West, Blasted and Far Away (Bedrock Productions); Blue/Orange (CrucibleTheatre) and La Musica and Titus Andronicus (Siren Productions].

Paul’s designs for Dance include: Sweat and Beautiful Tomorrow (ManDance); Macalla and Intimate Gold (Irish Modern Dance Theatre); SAMO (Block & Steel, Netherlands) and Catalyst, a collaboration between Rex Levitates and The National Ballet of China in Beijing.

Opera designs include: Tosca, Jenufa, The Queen of Spades, Madama Butterfly, Lady Macbeth of Mtensk, The Silver Tassie, Gianni Schicchi and A Florentine Tragedy (Opera Ireland); The Lighthouse (Opera Theatre Company); The Makropulos Case, Un Ballo in Maschera and Der Fliegende Holländer (Opera Zuid, Netherlands) and Maria di Rohan, Pénélope and Susannah (Wexford Festival Opera).

Paul also designed The Wishing Well; a large-scale outdoor projection piece for Kilkenny Arts Festival 1999, and the lighting for the Irish Pavilion at the Architectural Biennale in Venice 2004.
