‘Soho provides a network for young people interested in theatre as a whole, with whom they can share experiences, ideas and creativity. The skills, experience and artistic mentoring I received from the course were invaluable to me as someone with no formal education in the art of script writing.’ Neela Dolezalova

Open to 18-25 year olds, Soho Young Writers is a workshop programme that offers an introduction to the craft of playwriting and ongoing support. This three-tiered course is designed to inspire, develop and foster the next generation of playwrights.

Taster Workshops
6 hour introductory workshops open to anyone and held at Soho Theatre on the last Saturday of every month. The workshop will introduce participants’ to the basic principles of writing for the stage, creating characters and writing a scene in a day. From these workshops, you may be selected to take part in a ten-week writing course.

If you would like to attend a Taster Workshop or find out more about Soho Young Writers, please contact the Box Office on 020 7478 0100.

10-Week Course
From the Taster Workshops, young writers are selected to attend a longer ten-week course that runs twice a year. Participants will engage with workshops that explore specific elements of writing for the stage such as structure, language, creating character and writing dialogue. By the end of the ten-week term, each writer will have produced a short play for the stage, some of which have public readings in the theatre.

Core Group
On completion of a short play, playwrights may graduate to become part of the Core Group, a longer course where writers receive close dramaturgical support and attend master-classes whilst they write their full-length play. Throughout the programme we aim to hold readings of Young Writer’s work using professional actors and directors. If individuals have already written a substantial amount, they may be invited straight onto the ten-week course or into the core group.

Soho Young Writers is a pathway into other Soho Theatre development programmes. Playwright David Dipper attended a Taster Workshop in 2002, graduated to the Core Group and had his first play Flush produced by Soho Theatre in April 2004. He was then invited onto the Writers' Attachment Programme and has recently finished his commission for Soho Theatre.
