THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS CASTING ANNOUNCED

This Christmas Soho Theatre presents a new darkly funny musical version of The Night Before Christmas from the artistic team behind 2009’s Edward Gant’s Amazing Feats of Loneliness and 2011’s Realism. This new adaptation of the modern classic play by Anthony Neilson is directed by Soho Theatre’s Artistic Director Steve Marmion with music by Tom Mills.

Playing the role of Cherry is Rebecca Atkinson, Rebecca is best known for playing Karen Maguire in Channel 4’s Shameless, having been in the show from its inception. She has also appeared in BBC’s Life on Mars, Ideal and multi-platform sitcom Trexx and Flipside.

Warehouse owner Gary will be played by Navin Chowdhry. Navin is most known for his role as IT teacher Kurt in the BAFTA-nominated series Teachers. Other credits include Sky 1’s A Touch of Cloth and the BBC’s Five Days. On stage Navin played Zain in the Royal Court’s award-winning play Shades. He also wrote and produced the award-winning short film This Bastard Business and short play Mashed.

As the Elf is Craig Gazey, who appeared as Graeme Proctor in Coronation Street winning Best Newcomer at the Inside Soap and British Soap Awards. His theatre work includes the 2013 Sheffield Theatres’ production of The Full Monty, Third Floor at Trafalgar Studios and Antony and Cleopatra and The Tempest for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Craig and director Steve Marmion have previously worked together at Theatre Royal Plymouth’s Youth Theatre.

Completing the cast is Craig Kelly as Simon, best known for his role as factory owner Luke Strong in Coronation Street and Vince in Channel 4’s Queer as Folk. In 2009 he took part in BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing making it through to week eight. His theatre credits include Helpless at the Donmar Warehouse, Babies at the National Theatre Studio and Fast Labour at West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Also this Christmas Soho Theatre and nabokov’s production of Blink is revived. Phil Porter’s dysfunctional, voyeuristic and funny love story was commissioned as part of the Soho Six in 2012 and is directed by Soho’s Artistic Associate Joe Murphy. Soho Theatre is taking work to a much wider audience with Blink opening at their associate venue, Jagriti Theatre, Bangalore India, before spending Christmas in London and touring the UK in the spring.

Reprising their roles as Jonah and Sophie are Harry McEntire and Rosie Wyatt. Harry’s theatre credits include Macbeth at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, A Thousand Stars Explode in the Sky and Spring Awakening at Lyric Hammersmith and Winterlong at Manchester Royal Exchange. Rosie appeared in the UK and international tour of the National Theatre production of One Man, Two Guvnors, nabokov’s Bunny and Paines Plough’s Love Love Love.

There is a packed programme of performances at Soho Theatre this Christmas, in addition to The Night Before Christmas and Blink, Tony Law has Nonsense Overdrive, Nish Kumar proves Nish Kumar is a Comedian, Sue Timms presents a new Messiah in The Second Coming, Late Night Gimp Fight wish you a Merry Gimpmas, TO&ST Award Winner Lady Rizo returns with her late night cabaret and a special New Year’s Eve performance, we get into the Christmas Spirit with The Thinking Drinker’s Guide to Alcohol and bringing in the new year is Luisa Omeilan’s What Would Beyoncé Do?!
